Motor for hydraulic or electromechanical gate?

Has choosing between hydraulic or electromechanical automation for the automatic gate become your dilemma? VDS Automation has the answers you’ve been looking for to make your decision easier!

Hydraulic or electromechanical automation: technical differences

Is an hydraulic or electromechanical gate motor better? The best answer is not one but it is the consequence of correct evaluations on the type of gate on which the automation is to be installed.

First of all, you need to evaluate the type of gate to be installed based on the available space possibilities: in work spaces such as industries, a wide passage with the possibility of side opening leaves room for the option of a sliding gate, while in private residential contexts or condominiums, it is preferable to install a swing gate with inward opening, so as not to interfere with public land.

A second point to consider that makes the difference is the frequency of use: in working contexts a gate can be operated more than 100 times a day, so the automation requires greater resistance and better performance to support the opening and closing mechanism; the frequency differs greatly from private homes which consequently need a less powerful motor.

The third crucial aspect for choosing between hydraulic or electromechanical automation is the weight of the leaf or of the two leaves of the gate to be moved:

  • For gates with dimensions between 1.80 and 3.50 meters, electromechanical operation is always better because it effectively supports the opening and closing mechanism;
  • For gates over 4 meters, it is essential to opt for oil-pressure or hydraulic operation, as it lends itself to being the most suitable to facilitate automated opening and closing without overloading the motor.

The choice between hydraulic or electromechanical automation is not based on cost or ease of installation, but is defined on the basis of the power that the weight and frequency of use of the gate require from the motor.

An electromechanical motor certainly allows greater versatility of use, is easier to assemble and has lower construction and maintenance costs. The only weak point is wear and therefore it is inconvenient for accesses with a high frequency cycle.

Hydraulic motors, cooled with oil for more frequent use, are more powerful and performing but require more expensive even if much less frequent repairs.

The choice between an hydraulic or electromechanical automation is therefore determined by practical and logistical needs.

VDS Automation: hydraulic and electromechanical automations for each type of gate

For over 30 years our company has specialized in the design and production of automatisms for gates of all types and powers.

We produce both automatisms for sliding gates and automatisms for swing gates for private homes and for companies, guaranteeing high performance and durability, with all the accessories necessary for greater system safety.

Our automatisms are made only with Italian raw materials in our headquarters, by specialized professionals in the sector who test each motor before sale.
